The Horsehead Nebula (also known as Barnard 33 in bright nebula IC 434) is a dark nebula in the Orion constellation. The nebula is located just below Alnitak, the left star of Orion's Belt. It is approximately 1,500 light years from Earth, and is approximately 3.5 light years wide. One of the most identifiable nebulae in the sky, it is part of a swirling cloud of dark dust and gases, shaped like a horse's head. The red glow originates from hydrogen gas predominantly behind the nebula, ionized by the nearby bright star Sigma Orionis. The darkness of the Horsehead is caused mostly by thick dust, although the lower part of the Horsehead's neck casts a shadow to the left. Streams of gas leaving the nebula are funneled by a strong magnetic field. Bright spots in the Horsehead Nebula's base are young stars just in the process of forming.
"The Horsehead Nebula is a dark dusty nebula seen over red glowing hydrogen clouds behind in the Orion constellation. Brightest star on the image is Alnitak, the star farthest left on Orion's Belt. Flame Nebula also called ""Flaming Tree"" is just below this star. These nebulas are parts of the Orion Molecular Cloud Complex, a star-forming region in our Milky Way Galaxy. "
A natural color version using R, G, B, hydrogen alpha, Oxygen III and Sulphur II filters of the famous Horsehead Nebula. The actual horsehead is a small dark nebula (Barnard 33) which is set against the background of the larger star forming region (IC 434) made up primarily of ionized hydrogen gas. The Flame Nebula (NGC 2024) is seen to the left of the Horsehead and lower left of the bright star Alnitak, which is the eastern-most star in Orion's belt.
The Flame Nebula (NGC 2024) and Horsehead Nebula (B33 against IC 434) are beautiful emission and dark nebulas located near Alnitak, the easternmost star of Orion's Belt. Nebulas are 900-1500 light years away from Earth. Picture taken with professional CCD camera and refractor telescope (800mm, f/6.95) ha-alpha wavelength mixed with RGB (HaRGB image). Total exposure time 18h.
