The name Uncompahgre comes from a Ute Indian word, which translates to "dirty water," "red lake," or "red water spring". It may refer to the many hot springs in the Ouray area. The Uncompahgre River is a 75-mile-long tributary of the Gunnison River which flows out of the San Juan Mountains at 12,215 ft Lake Como. The Uncompahgre is on the west side of the Continental Divide and flows past Ouray, Ridgway, Montrose, and Olathe, joining the Gunnison River in Delta. The Claret Cup Cactus (Echinocereus triglochidiatus) gets its Latin name from the Greek echinos, meaning "a hedgehog," and cereus meaning "a wax taper." In naming the plant, the early Europeans thought that the spiny plant resembled a hedgehog and the plant’s shape resembled a taper. Triglochidialus means "three barbed bristles.” This refers to the spines arranged in clusters of three. The claret cup name is from the reddish, cup-shaped flowers. The claret cup stems are clumped together which reduces the amount of surface area exposed to heat loss. This enables the cacti to grow at high elevations such as in the San Juan Mountains. This claret cup cactus was photographed at 7,792 feet above sea level in the Uncompahgre National Forest near Ouray, Colorado, USA.
