Lafayette Park, located across the street from the White House, has been used as "a race track, a graveyard, a zoo, a slave market, an encampment for soldiers during the War of 1812, and many political protests and celebrations," according to the National Park Service. Today it is home to wandering tourists and cannons such as this. The image could be symbolic both of the battle for the White House (presidential campaign) and the power of the occupant to commit the country to war.
