A rare early spring mega bloom of wildflowers in 2020 began with a burst of yellow desert poppies near the Organ Mountains east of Las Cruces, New Mexico. Desert super blooms are caused by unusually high rainfall amounts that awaken dormant wildflower seeds.

Downtown Las Cruces, New Mexico, has spacious sidewalks made of modular concrete pavers, vintage bollards (short vertical green posts), strategically placed planters, green iron benches and trash receptacles. Strategically placed canopies built of precast colored and patterned concrete columns and beams with native stone bases provide much needed shade on hot summer days. The shade is provided by a metal framework with metal “latillas.”

The Basilica of San Albino, one of the oldest churches in the region, has the distinction of being originally established in Mexico and is now located in the United States as a result of the transfer of territory in the 1854 Gadsden Purchase. This historic church in La Mesilla, New Mexico is called Basilica of San Albino. The structure was built in 1906 and is now part of the Las Cruces, New Mexico Roman Catholic Diocese. The building was constructed in Romanesque, French style architecture due to early European influences.

Alamogordo, New Mexico, USA - August 8, 2017: Visitors at White Sands National Monument in southern New Mexico wait to see the full moon rising in early August of 2017. The monument stays open during full moon nights to provide views of the moon reflecting off the white sands. Musicians also sometimes perform during full moon programs at the monument, which is 16 miles southwest of Alamogordo, New Mexico. The attraction has 275 square miles of desert sand, making it the largest expanse of gypsum sand dunes in the world.

"Severe water shortages from a historic drought were developing in the summer of 2013 as water levels continued to drop drastically at Elephant Butte Lake, formed from the Rio Grande in southern New Mexico. In 2013, water from the lake was so scarce that irrigation district officials issued dire warnings to farmers to expect only a 30-day irrigation season from severely curtailed water releases. Elephant Butte Lake State Park at Truth or Consequences, New Mexico is distinguished by a formation in the shape of an elephant. The reservoir captures runoff from the Rio Grande for use in irrigation for agriculture. The lake is also popular for recreation including boating and fishing.

State-owned Spaceport America 45 miles north of Las Cruces, New Mexico hosts events such as rocket launches, including competitions featuring designs from college students. New Mexico officials built the facility in 2011 in hopes of attracting private and public space launch ventures. Many launches at the site are open to the public. The nearest community is Truth or Consequences.
