A former silver mining town that lies near the headwaters of the Arkansas River in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, the Leadville Historic District contains many historic structures and sites from its dynamic mining era. In the late 19th century, Leadville was the second most populous city in Colorado, after Denver. Situated at an elevation of 10,152 feet, Leadville is the highest incorporated city and the second highest incorporated municipality in the United States.

The town of Leadville, Colorado is known as the City Above the Clouds, and it's easy to see why. Sitting at 10,200 feet above sea level, it is the highest incorporated town in the United States. Leadville, United States - September 6, 2015: The Leadville, Colorado and Southern is a tourist train that takes passengers along the mountainside over the headwaters of the Arkansas River to an overlook of the Climax Molybdemum Mine and Fremont Pass. The tracks were originally run by first the Denver, South Park and Pacific line, then Burlington Northern, hauling mine tailings from the silver mines in Leadville to smelters and the Front Range.
