The Iconic San Gotthard Panorama Express - a Classic Spectacular Swiss Railway Journey A stunning series of 11 images taken on from an iconic railway journey on the San Gotthard Panorama Express in high summer 2019 from Fluelen on Lake Lucerne in Canton Uri, Central Switzerland, through and over the San Gotthard Pass to Lugano in Ticino or Italian Switzerland in the South. This route is one of the highest and oldest high altitude rail journeys in the world. Built in 1882 the railway rises through cool climate scenic mountain villages in German Switzerland in a series of loops up to a height of 1151m before passing through a summit tunnel of 15km and then emerging into the Mediterranean dry heat and palm trees of the Ticino Canton before descending back down to the Italian-esque lake side city of Lugano, still in Switzerland but strongly resembling the Northern Italian Lakes of this region. This route has now been replaced by the low level, high speed base tunnel 56km long and almost flat and some 700m below the original tunnel. These images perfectly depict the steep sided valleys on both sides of the pass, the lush green forests and meadows, the scenic picturesque mountain villages and churches, the speed of the train and the marked change of culture and architecture, from Germanic to Italianate as well as the remarkable feats of Civil Engineering that made this journey feasible. This 11th and final image of the series is of the city of Lugano marking the terminus of the Gotthard Route. This elegant city on the shores of the eponymous lake has many spectacular buildings and sub-tropical parks. Dominated by the mountains of Monte San Salvatore and Monte Bre this image shows the city from an elevated position, with the lake and mountains on the opposite shore in the distance. The focal point is the distinctive campanile of the Roman Ctaholic Cathedral of Saint Lawrence which dates from the Middle Ages but it's facade was rebuilt and enlarged in the 15th Century and completed in 1517. lepontine alps stock pictures, royalty-free photos & images

The Austro-Turkish War ( 1663 - 1664 ) or fourth Austro-Turkish War was a short war between the Habsburg Monarchy and the Ottoman Empire. The Ottoman aim was to resume the advance in central Europe, conquer Vienna and subdue Austria. However, the Habsburg army under Raimondo Montecuccoli succeeded in halting the Ottoman army on its way to Vienna in the Battle of Saint Gotthard and destroy it, while another Austrian army won another victory at Léva. after F.W.
