Lincoln Cathedral (or the Cathedral Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Lincoln), in Lincoln, England is the seat of the Anglican bishop. Building commenced in 1088 and continued in several phases throughout the medieval period. It was the tallest building in the world for 238 years (1311–1549), and the first building to hold that title after the Great Pyramid of Giza. The central spire collapsed in 1549 and was not rebuilt. The cathedral is the third largest in Britain (in floor area) after St Paul's and York Minster, being 484 by 271 feet.
The Burghley Almshouses at Stamford Lincolnshire in the UK. Lord Burghley's Hospital was founded in 1597. It is on the site of the Medieval Hospital of St John the Baptist and St Thomas the Martyr. The medieval hospital had been founded around 1174 and confirmed in 1190 under Peterborough Abbey for the use of pilgrims and the poor. It had apparently fallen into disuse by the 16th century when only the chapel continued in use. It was bought in 1549 by William Cecil and was maintained as an almshouse by 1595. It was officially endowed by Lord Burghley in 1597 when it was to house 13 old men, one of whom was to serve as warden. The buildings are built with local Barnack limestone.
The historic town of Stamford in Lincolnshire in the UK. The famous gallows sign, shown here dates back to the days when the town was a principal stop on the coaching route between London and York. The sign was erected across the street outside the George Hotel, a principal stop during the coaching heyday of the18th century. The gallows sign served as a welcome to visitors and a deterrent to the notorious highwaymen that operated on the route, such as Dick Turpin. The prominent spire of St Mary’s church stands against the skyline in the background. Good copy space.
