One of the renowned and big constructions of Süryani Kadim Community, the monastery was perched on a high hill. The largest and most important of the still-functioning monasteries in Tur Abdin and one of the oldest monasteries in the world, Mor Gabriel is situated in the hills 20 kilometers southeast of Midyat. Dayro d-Mor Gabriel, also known as Deyrulumur, is the oldest surviving Syriac Orthodox monastery in the world.

According to the local Syriac community, the 6th-century church was originally established by the three Kings of the Orient. The Syriac name of the church is Yoldath (Aloho). The exterior of the dome and bell tower are 20th-century additions. The church bears a striking similarity to the large church at the Deyr-ül Zafaran Monastery, and is considered the most beautiful example of church architecture in Tur Abdin.

Killit (Dereiçi), an almost abandoned ancient Syrian village 5 km from Savur, stands out for its stone buildings. The village was once a large and important Syrian settlement before the emigration and had three churches and three monasteries belonging to the Orthodox, Protestant and Catholic communities. The village was known for its wines and grape production, and the grape harvest tradition still continues in the region. One of the most striking buildings in the village, the Mor Yuhanon Monastry, dates back to the 7th century.
