The northern desert has vegetation only after the rains. The savannah includes a wide variety of herbaceous vegetation, with trees such as mahogany, kapok, baobab and shea tree. There are antelopes, lions, leopards, hyenas, monkeys and countless varieties of birds and insects. In the Niger River there are crocodiles, hippos and sometimes manatees. Turtles, lizards, pythons, vipers and other varieties of snakes abound. At the beginning of the 21st century, at least 131 species of mammals, 125 species of birds and more than 1,450 species of plants were counted throughout the country.

Photograph taken on June 12, 2022 in the city of Niamey, the capital of Niger. The long river that runs through the city also goes by the same name, the Niger River. One of the few tourist attractions is to cross part of the river in these wooden barges that bring us closer to the hippos without losing sight of the crocodiles. Sitting in these boats, one has the feeling of being able to feed on any of them, although seeing them is an experience that was well worth it.
