Rome, Italy, November 30 -- A suggestive night view along Ponte Sant'Angelo, on the Tiber River, in the historic and baroque core of the Eternal City. This bridge was built under the emperor Hadrian in 134 AD. to connect the heart of Rome with the mausoleum of the emperor himself, the current Castel Sant'Angelo (on front). A few centuries later, under the pontificate of Pope Clement IX, the architect and sculptor Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini was commissioned to create the current balustrade decorated with ten statues of the Angels of the Passion of Christ. According to tradition, it was Bernini's pupils who sculpted the statues of the angels in 1669. Built around 123 AD as a sepulcher of the emperor Hadrian and his family along the Tiber river, the current Castel Sant'Angelo was used over the centuries as a fortress, prison and refuge by the Popes due to its proximity to the Vatican.
