The Saskatchewan Legislative Building was designed by Edward and W.S. Maxwell of Montreal, Quebec who described their design as a free adaptation of English Renaissance architecture which marks it unmistakably as a representative of the British Sovereignty under which the province is governed. Construction began on August 31, 1908, and the building was officially opened on October 12, 1912 by His Royal Highness the Duke of Connaught, who was Governor General of Canada and a son of Queen Victoria. The Saskatchewan Legislative Building is 167 metres long and 94 meters wide from the north to south wings, and 56 metres high from ground level to the top of the dome.

The Legislative Building on the shores of Wascana Lake in Regina, Saskatchewan, is surrounded by frost-covered trees in winter. A clear blue sky, very typical of Saskatchewan, provides a nice backdrop. The Legislative Building is reflected in open water on the otherwise frozen lake. These open water circles are a result of aeration systems in the lake, and in this photo the areation circle provides nice asymmetrical balance to the Legislative Building. The Saskatchewan flag flies on the building in the morning breeze.

The Kwakiutl Totem Pole was carved from Western Red Cedar at Vancouver, British Columbia by Lloyd Wadhams of the Nimpkish Indian Band. It was gifted to the Province of Saskatchewan by the Government of British Columbia to commemorate their centennial year in 1971, and is one of twelve that was presented to Canadian centres. It is 4.9 metres high, 1.1 metres in diameter, and weighs approximately 1,588 kilograms. The predominant feature is a large thunderbird, a legendary being in North American Indigenous history and culture. For the Kwakiutl Indigenous people, it is particularly a symbol of family solidarity.
