The Edmund Pettus Bridge is the site where Police attacked civil rights movement protesters with tear gas and billy clubs on March 7, 1965, during a peaceful march to Montgomery, Alabama. It became a flashpoint because it was nationally televised and aroused outrage and sympathy for the movement. The event became known as "Bloody Sunday". The bridge carries US Route 80 Business across the Alabama River. It is named after Edmund Pettus, a lawyer, judge, Confederate Brigadier General, and Grand Dragon of the Ku Klux Klan.
