The Edmund Pettus Bridge is the site where Police attacked civil rights movement protesters with tear gas and billy clubs on March 7, 1965, during a peaceful march to Montgomery, Alabama. It became a flashpoint because it was nationally televised and aroused outrage and sympathy for the movement. The event became known as "Bloody Sunday".
