Anisakis ( Anisakis simplex ) is a genus of parasitic nematodes that have life cycles involving fish and marine mammals. They are infective to humans and cause anisakiasis. (Phycis blennoides ) is a species of fish belonging to the family Phycidae Parasitic nematode worm roundworm Ascaris lumbricoides which inhabits human intestine and causes disease ascariasis

The large roundworm (A. lumbricoides) lives in the intestines where it lays eggs. The larvae penetrate the intestine wall entering the blood stream and infestating several organs. About 1 billion people are infected worldwide with this parasite.

Computer illustration of Brugia malayi a parasitic nematode worm and cause of human lymphatic filariasis (elephantiasis). Brugia malayi is one of five types of nematode worm which cause human filariasis. They are spread by blood- sucking insects. The worms then invade the human lymphatic system to produce thousands of larvae that spread around the body. Repeated infection causes lymph vessels to become inflamed and fluid to accumulate, which can lead to an enormous enlargement of parts of the body (elephantiasis). Treatment is usually with anthelmintic drugs.

The roundworm, Contracaecum rudolphii, is a parasitic nematode belonging to the family Anisakidae. Fish are by far the main source of infection as they serve as intermediate host of the nematodes. The final hosts are marine mammals (e.g. seals) or piscivorous birds (e.g. cormorants and pelicans). Identification of these nematodes is important in terms of seafood safety and public health, as humans may be infected following consumption of infected seafood. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM), magnified x27 when printed at 10cm wide.
