The city is located in south-east Scotland, and is bounded to the north by the Firth of Forth estuary and to the south by the Pentland Hills. Edinburgh had a population of 506,520 in mid-2020, making it the second-most populous city in Scotland and the seventh-most populous in the United Kingdom. Cockburn Street is a street in Edinburgh's Old Town, created in 1856 as a meandering link from the High Street to Waverley Station. Originally Lord Cockburn Street was named after the then recently deceased Scottish lawyer, judge and man of letters, Henry, Lord Cockburn. while urging his fellow citizens to be careful in ensuring early Victorian expansion, e.g. Improvements such as Cockburn Street have not irreversibly damaged or destroyed built heritage and the environment. Lord Cockburn's head is carved at the entrance to 1 Cockburn Street (the former Cockburn Hotel), which now serves as the offices of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo. There are a number of small specialist shops along the street.
