The remains of destroyed tanks and other war equipment at the Wadi Doum war site in the Sahara, northern Chad, close to the Ennedi massif. The sand dunes now cover much of the old war equipment. This is where the last battles of the war between Chad and its northern neighbor Libya took place in 1986/1987 - in 1987, Chad's army was able to push back Libyan troops in the so-called "Toyota War", thus ending the military conflict.

St. Louis, Senegal, March 12th 2013. The heart of this old colonial city is located on a narrow island in the Senegal River. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage and described as "the city most threatened by rising sea levels in the whole of Africa" by the United Nations' UN-Habitat agency. The streets of the the chaotic city center, provide a stage for all kind of vehicles, horse carts, typical Sahel short-distance buses, cars and pedestrians. The residents of Saint-Louis try to make the best out of it, but poverty can be seen on every corner of the city.
Bush fires are one of the scourges of the Sahel region. Fueled by thermal breezes and dry grass, they can destroy vast areas of pasture. It spread for nearly 10 hours, destroying several thousand hectares. Located in Ferlo, in the north of Senegal, the territory studied by the french Nationa center for scientific research ( CNRS) Tessékéré presents all the features specific to the Sahel (rainfall deficit, anthropogenic pressure on the environment, modification of the major ecological balances) and the particularity of being at the heart of the Sahel.
