This rare encounter with a Critically Endangered Hawksbill Sea Turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), was captured whilst scuba diving at Koh Rok islands in the Andaman Sea, Krabi, Thailand. Sea Turtles are reef dwelling creatures who feed mainly on jellyfish and coral. The Hawksbill Turtle, unlike other sea Turtles, feeds predominantly on sponge corals. Making it a crucial part of the Coral Reef Ecosystem. Hawksbills are perhaps the most endangered of all sea Turtles. Being classed as critically endangered on the IUCN red list, due to being hunted for their meat and shell. There are estimated to be only 15,000 pairs left in the wild. The Cozumel reef system is part of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, the second largest coral reef system in the world. The Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System (MBRS), also popularly known as the Great Mayan Reef or Great Maya Reef, is a marine region that stretches over 1,000 kilometres (620 mi) from Isla Contoy at the tip of the Yucatán Peninsula down to Belize, Guatemala and the Bay Islands of Honduras. The reef system includes various protected areas and parks including the Belize Barrier Reef, Arrecifes de Cozumel National Park, Hol Chan Marine Reserve (Belize), Sian Ka'an biosphere reserve, and the Cayos Cochinos Marine Park.
