Rio Grande Gorge in the Fall The Rio Grande River originates in the San Juan Mountains of south-central Colorado.  It flows 1,896 miles through Colorado, New Mexico and Texas where it is the international border between the United States and Mexico.  It eventually empties into the Gulf of Mexico.  In northern New Mexico the river flows 50 miles through a tectonic chasm known as the Rio Grande Gorge.  In 2013 the gorge and 242,500 acres of surrounding land was designated as the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument.
