The fountain is set against the wall that separates Via Giulia from the Lungotevere, not far from the rear façade of Palazzo Farnese. It was built - presumably in the second quarter of the seventeenth century - at the expense of the Farnese (as shown by the lily of the crowning) by Girolamo Rainaldi (1570-1655), the same architect who in those years made twin fountains on Piazza Farnese.
Rome, Italy, November 15 -- The famous Fontana del Mascherone (the fountain of the Big Mask) between Via Giulia and Via del Mascherone, in the historic heart of Rome. This famous Roman fountain in full Baroque style, located in the Rione Regola (Regola district), was built in the 17th century by the architect and sculptor Girolamo Rainaldi for the Farnese family. The Rione Regola, near Campo de Fiori, is one of the most beautiful and visited districts of Rome for the presence of countless artistic and historical treasures, monuments and ancient Romanesque and Baroque churches, but also for its squares and alleys to explore freely, where it is easy to find typical restaurants, small artisan shops, street artists, and the original Roman soul. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco. Image in High Definition format.
