The Admiralty and Cenotaph, Whitehall London, England - April 25, 2011: A group of people looking at the wreaths beside The Cenotaph, in Whitehall, London. The Cenotaph was designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens as a memorial to the dead in the First World War: it now represents every Commonwealth battle since 1918. It is the focus of national mourning and hosts the Remembrance Day service on the Sunday nearest to November 11th each year. 'Cenotaph' means 'empty tomb'. The memorial displays a simple carved wreath on each side of the words 'The Glorious Dead'. Flags for the British military services and the Union Jack stand around the plinth. It bears no religious wording or symbols. Further down Whitehall, a large crowd is looking through the gates of Downing Street, home of the British Prime Minister.
