Vintage portrait of William H. Seaward (1801-1872), United States Secretary of State from 1861 to 1869. Prior to this, he served as governor of New York and United States Senator. Seward became one of America's leading advocates in the fight to end slavery. He also organized the purchase of Alaska in 1867.

Vintage image represents the Emancipation Proclamation, an executive order issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, close to the third year of the American Civil War. The proclamation declared "that all persons held as slaves" within the rebellious states "are, and henceforward shall be free."

It was originally scanned from an 1886 publication now in the public domain as released by the British Library.William Seward was Secretary of State during the Lincoln and Johnson Administrations. He was severely attacked on the same night that Lincoln was assassinated. He is also known as the primary American negotiator for the purchase of Alaska.
