South Horr, Kenya - July 29, 2013: Two Samburu women adorned in ceremonial dress prepare a fresh brew of Chai tea in South Horr, Kenya after the birth of a new baby goat. The Samburu survive by their livestock, so the birth of a new goat , camel or sheep is a special occasion. The Samburu will always assist with the birthing process to ensure a trouble free birth. The animals birth acts as good fortune for the family so it is a time for celebration. Economic down turns and the new threat of extremests in the horn of Africa are putting pressure on the samburu to change their way of life but large populations of Samburu people still live a hassel free life in the North of the country.

Questioned further why they do it they say that it helps them preserve their culture. It shows their children that they can still live a traditional lifestyle and stay true to their culture.

Mursi woman wear the lip plates as they are said to be seen as a sign of strength. Mursi men see the lip plates as a sign that the woman can endure great pain. When the lip plates are removed though there is nothing but a long wrinkled lip left in place that constantly dribbles saliva.
