Description

Stone Town, on Zanzibar Island, Tanzania, held the last official slave market ever recorded (slavery was abolished in 1897). Seen here is an underground holding cell where people were crammed in waiting for the next slave auction. Visiting this site produced very strong emotions for me regarding the inhuman treatment that was forced upon countless men, women and children in the not too distant past. Although not a pleasant experience, one that I think anyone visiting the island should have in order to solidify the commitment of 'never again'.
