The original Brunswick Lion sculpture, built by Henry the Lion in 1166 as a sign of royal supremacy. In order to protect the original, a faithful replica of the original has stood on the Burgplatz since 1989. The original is in the Dankwarderode Castle. It is the most famous landmark of the city of Brunswick. Woodcut engraving after a drawing by Hermann Knackfuss (German painter, 1848 - 1915), published in 1880.
