The impressive Western Doorway of Rochester Cathedral, in Kent, England. Also known as the Cathedral Church of Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary, this lovely little cathedral has a history reaching back to the 7th century. The present Norman building was started in the 11th century and suffered badly during Henry VIII's Dissolution of the Monasteries around 1538. Many improvements and renovations were made by Sir George Gilbert Scott during the late 19th century. Illustration from 'Picturesque Europe - The British Isles' published by Cassell Petter & Galpin in 1875 (price 2/6d).
