A common Reef Octopus (Octapus cyanea) is hunting in the shallow coral reef at Phi Phi Archipelago, Andaman Sea, Krabi, Thailand. Here is a rarely seen behaviour, where the Octopus uses its legs to create an ‘umbrella’ blanket over a rock. It then flushes out fish using suction. Extremely intelligent, they have the ability to change colour to blend in with their surroundings to avoid predation. It is notoriously difficult to approach these creatures and takes time and skill to get in close without scaring them off. Sony mirrorless camera, with underwater housing and Mares video lighting used.

Coral reefs are the one of earths most complex ecosystems, containing over 800 species of corals and one million animal and plant species. Here we see a shallow coral reef with several mating Pharoah Cuttlefish (Sepia pharaonis). Cuttlefish (Cephalopod) are able to change colour to blend in with their surroundings by way of camouflage, as seen here. This is a primal instinctive animal behaviour, that helps to ensure their survival. Image taken whilst scuba diving in Phi Phi archipelago, Krabi, Thailand.

Two Cuttlefish (Sepia) are mating above a coral reef in the Andaman Sea, Thailand. The female in front laying her eggs in the coral reef. Their colours match the reef identically, behind her, several other males flashing neon to impress the female. Challengers who lurk in the background hoping to steal the female. This amazing display of camouflage protects and allows them to avoid and conquer attacks from predators. This is a primal instinctive behaviour displayed by the Cephalopod, that helps to ensure their survival and success as a species.
