The species measures about 55 centimeters in length, with rusty plumage. The adult is all reddish brown, with black wingtips and tail and long feathers. It has a narrow white stripe on the tail. Legs and bare skin of the nostrils, yellow. Black beak and reddish brown eyes. As with other hawks, the young are very different. Muted colors, brownish gray back and cream belly, with dark vertical stripes and a dark half-collar. Over the eyes, a clear stripe. The tail is cream, with fine dark stripes.
