Description
The French started the construction in 1690 of the fortress at Brimstone Hill, on the island of Saint Kitts in the Caribbean. After its capture by the British, the fortress was completed and was known as the ""Gibraltar of the West Indies."" Perched on an 800 foot spur of Mount Liamuiga overlooking the west coast of the island, the fortress covers almost 40-acres. In the background of this photo is the volcano, Mount Misery.
