New Lanark Village is a World Heritage Site. It was a model village, built from 1785 onwards, for mill-workers. Both the factory conditions (corporal punishment was banned and workers were encouraged to attend evening classes) and the village itself - which included a church and, unusually for its time, a school - were exemplary. The mill and village became well known when Robert Owen was manager between 1800 and 1825. He wanted to show that a mill factory could be commercially successful and still treat the workers like human beings. His methods were greatly resented by other factory owners of the time.
