He assumed the presidency as he was vice president at the time of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. During the U.S. Civil War (1861-1865), Johnson was the only Southern senator to remain loyal to the Union. Johnson is the first president to be impeached, charged by the House of Representatives for violating the Tenure of Office Act.

Andrew Johnson ( December 29, 1808 – July 31, 1875 ) was the 17th president of the United States, serving from 1865 to 1869. He assumed the presidency following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, as he was vice president at that time.
