Vignola is a city in the region of Emilia-Romagna, Italy. It is famous for its sweet, dark ‘moretta’ cherries, which are grown only in the Valle del Panaro, south of Modena. The Rocca (hilltop castle) dates from the late twelfth century, and was occupied as a residence during the Renaissance by the Contrari family from Ferrara, who governed the area from the start of the fifteenth century until the mid-sixteenth century. The Mannerist architect Giacamo (or Jacopo) Barozzi (or Barocchio) was born in the city in 1507.
