Description
"The stylized Akuaba fetish figurine, of which this is a typical example, is used by women throughout Ghana (esp. Akan women and those of the Asante tribe) who wish to become pregnant. These women may treat the Akuaba as a substitute baby in doll form, wearing it on their backs and otherwise caring for it daily in hopes that the power of the figurine will aid their own fertility. Frequently women will add their own decorations, such as the neck beads shown on this representative of a very common Asante Akuaba form in dark wood.My other photos from Ghana are in"
