Description
Close-up of Staghorn Coral Acropora sp. Typical for Acropora species: Always a polyp on top of every branch. Staghorn corals are among the fastest growing corals on reefs, and are excellent reef-builders. Staghorn corals often out-compete all other corals in shallow tropical reefs, however, their speed of growth (which can be up to 10 to 20 centimetres a year is balanced by the fragility of some of the structures, as they are easily damaged in storms allowing other coral species a chance of growth. Even if well hidden, the Coral Shrimp Vir philippinensis can be identified. Ngerchong Island, Palau, Micronesia, 7°6'57.48" N 134°22'1.879" E at 5m depth
