Description
The Giant Clam Tridacna gigas, the largest species of bivalve molluscs, occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific Ocean in a depth range from 0-35m. The outer side of the shell is designed to be encrusted by all kind of sessile animals. Max. recorded size is 137cm and 500kg! In addition the ecological role of Tridacna gigas, shells of this bivalve species are useful bioarchives for past climate and environmental reconstructions. This specimen is from southwest Peleliu Island, Palau, Micronesia, 7°7'39.62 N 134°17'31.01 E at 16m depth
