Description
The natural, deep water harbour and fishing town of Port-Vendres, situated in the Catalan region in the Pyrenees Orientales region of south-west France on the Mediterranean coast - very close to the Spanish border. This part of the coastline is often referred to as the Cote Vermeille, The Vermillion Coast.A natural deep-water port in this part of the French Mediterranean coast, it caters for freighters and cruise ships, along with large and small fishing boats and pleasure boats. Port-Vendres is renowned for its numerous fish and sea food restaurants around the quayside. The town sits under the edge of the Pyrenees mountain with Fort Saint Elne overlooking from an adjacent hilltop and is also surrounded by many hectares of vineyards that make the excellent Roussillon and Banyuls AOC wines.
