Description
The mother and the young elephant have their back to the camera, the mother is eating, and the calf is sheltering between her legs. Desert adapted elephants are not a separate species but do have several adaptations developed to help them live in the desert. This includes larger feet, thinner legs and smaller bodies than their savannah dwelling brothers. The photo was taken in a remote area of the Hoanib River near Sesfontein, on the Damaraland and Koakoland border, in the Kunene Region of North West Namibia, in February 2020
