Description
The Garganey is a scarce and very secretive breeding duck in the UK. It is smaller than a Mallard and slightly bigger than a Teal. The male is most easily recognised by a broad white stripe over the eye. In flight, it shows a pale blue forewing. It feeds by 'dabbling' – dipping its bill into the water to catch insects. Garganeys are listed as a Schedule 1 species. This duck is a summer visitor, spending the winter in Africa. Although large flocks can be found in their wintering grounds, they are usually only seen in pairs or small groups in the UK.
