Description
A Japanese woman in Maiko’s costume and hairstyle is admiring cherry blossom, holding a red umbrella in her hand, on the bridge of Nijo, Higasiyama, Kyoto. Under the bridge flows a canal which is a part of Biwa Lake Canal, which originate in Lake Biwa, the biggest lake in Japan, located in Shiga Prefecture to the north of Kyoto. She wears traditional long-sleeved kimono with long dangling sash and her hair is elaborately decorated with seasonal flower-featured hairpins. The main jobs for maiko, an apprentice geisha, are to perform songs and dances as well as to play shamisen, three-stringed musical instruments. At night, they go out to entertain guests at traditional and exclusive Japanese restaurants (ochaya).
