January 5, 2020- La Soufrière is an active, strato volcano located on the beautiful Caribbean island of Saint Vincent. The peak of the volcano is approximately 1,204m above sea level. This volcano erupted several times in the past including the years 1718, 1812, 1814, 1902, 1971 & 1979. The eruption in 1902 claimed the lives of over 1,500 people on the island. Today, La Soufrière is one of the main tourist attractions on the island. Tourists trek through challenging forested trails to get to the top of the volcano. This active volcano is being monitored and studied continuously by the University of the West Indies (UWI) Seismic Research Centre, Soufrière Monitoring Unit and other international researchers.
