Description
The West Gopuram, or Entrance Tower, to the Meenakshi Amman Hindu Temple in the 2500 year old South Indian city of Madurai. The City is located in the heart of the South Indian State of Tamil Nadu. The temple has 14 Gopurams in total, but the main ones are located at the North, South, East and West entrances. Gods, Goddesses and stories from Hindu scriptures adorn the Gopuram. The Temple is mentioned in Tamil Literature as early as the 7th Century AD. The current structure was built between 1623 and 1655 during the reign of the King Thirumalai Nayak.
