Mosaic image of St. Louis IX, King of France, in the Basilica of St. Maurice of Agaunum Abbey, founded in 515 in Switzerland by Sigismund, King of the Burgundians -- who paid for the abbey to be built there at the base of a mountain range. The abbey is named St. Maurice, who commanded Roman soldiers of the Theban Legion. St. Maurice and the Theban Legion of over 6,000 soldiers were martyred in 285 A.D. at the site where the abbey was built. The Saint Maurice city area is listed among the Inventory of Swiss Heritage Sites.
