Noboribetsu, Japan - May 3, 2022: Onsen is a hot spring located in Noboribetsu City, Hokkaido.The existence of hot springs has been known since the Edo period.A hot spring inn was established in the Meiji era and became a resort and tourist destination.It is one of the famous hot spring areas in Japan.The etymology of the place name is derived from the Ainu word "Nupuru Petu" (a dark blue river).Jigokudani is a group of craters. The diameter is about 450 m and the area is about 11 ha. It is the source of Noboribetsu Onsen.A lava dome was formed by volcanic activity about 15,000 years ago.Oyunuma and Jigokudani were formed by repeating steam eruptions from about 8,000 years ago.The latest eruption is 200 years ago.It is designated as a "Special Protection Area" in Shikotsu-Toya National Park.
