Description
Setubal, Portugal: Phalanx CIWS (pronounced "sea-wiz") for defense against threats such as small boats, torpedoes, anti-ship missiles and helicopters. Designed and manufactured by the General Dynamics, Pomona Division, later a part of Raytheon. Consists of a radar-guided Vulcan cannon mounted on a swivelling base. The M61 Vulcan is a six-barrel, air-cooled, electrically fired Gatling-style rotary cannon which fires 20 mm (0.8 in) rounds at an extremely high rate (6,000 rounds per minute).
