Description
Sculpted granite stone building facade detail and pattern in abstract - the Fairmont San Francisco Hotel. The Fairmont is a luxury hotel atop Nob Hill. It was named after mining magnate and U.S. Senator James Graham Fair by his daughters. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. The hotel was nearly completed before the San Francisco earthquake of 1906, but although the structure survived, the interior was heavily damaged by fire, and opening was delayed until 1907. The interior is beautifully ornate, featuring such attractions as the Tonga Room and Hurricane Bar - an historic tiki bar featuring artificial thunderstorms. Reinforced concrete was used extensively in its construction and repair so that it would withstand future earthquake events. San Francisco, California, 2012.
