Description
The sumptuous monumental staircase of Trinità dei Monti, better known as the Spanish Steps, with the facade of the church of the Santissima Trinità dei Monti, in the historic and baroque heart of Rome. A masterpiece of the late Roman Baroque, the monumental staircase was built in 1721 to connect the church on the hill with the Palazzo di Spagna, seat of the embassy of the Iberian country, in the square below (Piazza di Spagna). Designed by the architect and urban planner Francesco De Sanctis, the Spanish Steps were inaugurated by Pope Benedict XIII on the occasion of the Jubilee of 1725. The photo was taken from Via Condotti, one of the streets of luxury and fashion in the center of Rome. In 1980 the historic center of Rome was declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco.
