Description
M20, The Trifid Nebula is an H II region located in the constellation of Sagittarius. It is a good example of 3 kinds of nebulae; an emission nebula seen as the red region of ionized hydrogen gas, a reflection nebula seen here as the blue region reflecting the light of the central star, and a dark nebula seen as the dark regions separating the region into its characteristic "lobes". NGC 6531 is the open star cluster that is seen in the upper right region of the image. This image was captured using a monochrome camera and using red, green and blue filters to create a color image, and the colors are further enhanced in the red and blue regions by incorporating the narrowband Hydrogen Alpha and Oxygen III filters. 11 hours total integration time.
