Thors's Helmet- a nebula in the constellation Canis Major stock photo

Thors's Helmet- a nebula in the constellation Canis Major Thor's Helmet - NGC 2359 to give it its proper name - has an overall bubble shape, but with complex filamentary structures and a curved bow-shock-thought to be created by interactions with a nearby large molecular cloud.

It is certainly reminiscent of the helmet one would imagine the Norse God as wearing!

It is largely interstellar material swept up by winds from a very hot central star- if you look closely at the image (at the "helmet") you can see a small but bright orange star. That's a Wolf Rayet star- a star that's going to go supernova- one of these days- and that's the sculptor of this cosmic creation. Astronomy Stock Photo
