Wood bison blocking traffic on Highway 3, Northwest Territories, Canada Wood Bison (Bos bison athabascae) are the largest land mammals in North America. They are dark brown and have a massive head, a distinct beard, a shoulder hump and curved horns.
The Mackenzie bison population was the first wood bison population re-established in an effort to conserve and recover wood bison in the Northwest Territories, Canada. Today, this population occupies a wilderness area on both side of highway 3 of approximately 20,000 km2 ranging from the Mackenzie River at Fort Providence, north to Behchoko and eastward to Yellowknife.
