An old British certificate of compulsory vaccination, dated 1860 for a child aged 7 weeks. The vaccination was against smallpox, which was widespread during the 19th century; the Compulsory Vaccination Act was that of 1853 which stated that all babies must be vaccinated by the age of four months.

Ship Great Eastern 1860 SS Great Eastern was an iron sailing steamship designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, and built by J. Scott Russell & Co. at Millwall Iron Works on the River Thames, London. She was by far the largest ship ever built at the time of her 1858 launch, and had the capacity to carry 4,000 passengers from England to Australia without refuelling. Queen Victoria ceremonially firing the first shot with a rifle to inaugurate the Wimbledon Rifle Meetings at Wimbledon Common in 1860. She also awarded a prize of £250 to the best individual marksman. The Annual Meeting has continued each year with the exception of both World Wars but since 1889 the National Rifle Association has held the meetings at Bisley. Two boys in the foreground relax in the grass as they read books in front of the Gay Head Lighthouse. Meanwhile a cow grazes in the field and the ligtht house keeper on the tower balcony scans the horizon with his telescope. This issustration is from a 1860 edition of Harper's New Monthly Magazine. The tower, still stands at the Gay Head (now known as Aquinnah) section of the island of Martha's Vineyard off the Massachusetts Coast. Due to the relentless erosion of the seacoast, there recently have been plans generated to move the tower 200 feet inland in May 2015

The end of the expedition is traditionally set with the famous meeting in Teano ( northern Campania ) between Victor Emmanuel and Garibaldi ( 26 October 1860 ).
