Having been consistently inhabited since the early 13th century, currently there are about 300 adobe and stucco homes there, with 30 year round residents. This Native American tribe has approximately 5,000 members today, with the little pueblo's population swelling on the weekends with family members visiting their ancestral homes and tourists taking part in guided tours. San Estevan del Rey Mission Church, a National Historic Landmark, was built in 1629 by Franciscans to control and acculturate the people at the Acoma Pueblo. This ancient Acoma village is located at the top of a mesa, over 360 feet above the ground and is one of the oldest continuously occupied places in the United States.

Enchanted Mesa is a sandstone butte in Cibola County, New Mexico, United States, about 2.5 miles northeast of the pueblo of Acoma. Acoma tradition says that Enchanted Mesa was the home of the Acoma people until a severe storm and landslide destroyed the only approach.

Since Acoma Pueblo is on a mesa overlooking the desert and there is no running water or electricity there, it stands to reason that the 30 residents who live there year round would need bathroom facilities. Well, here they are! Several outhouses (one with the sliver of a moon on its door) stand at the edge of the mesa...I guess everything runs downhill from there!
